11.08.2009 National Enduro Series - 9th round Marquette, MI Shock Doctor/KTM rider Russell Bobbitt strengthened his points lead over teammate Mike Lafferty with his fifth win of the season at the ninth round of the AMA National Enduro Series. It was another great battle and close race for the KTM pair as both riders exchanged special test wins throughout the day. “I felt great in the first test and won by a couple seconds over Mike. Then he got me by a few seconds in the second test and so on,” commented Bobbitt. Bobbitt reported that the track was quite technical from the first test through the final test. “It started with a couple fast tests that incorporated a lot of sand. By the final three tests we had worked our way up the mountain into the slippery rocks for a more demanding challenge.” Although Bobbitt walked away with the win he claimed it wasn’t easy. “I slid out in the third test section twice because it was so slick. Then in the 4th session I had an even bigger get off that I took a few moments to recover from. I actually don’t remember it that well. I thought my day was over after that crash.” Going into the final test section, Lafferty had a decent lead on Bobbitt. Unfortunately, Lafferty crashed hard in the final second losing a lot of time to Bobbitt. The time he lost worked to Bobbitt’s benefit as he was able to finish one minute ahead of his teammate. In the end, Bobbitt’s three test wins were solid enough to take the overall for the day allowing his points lead to stretch to 6 points over Lafferty. With only one round left in the series – the finale will again be another nail bitter for the two teammates that are now accustomed to battling closely for championship wins. Results 1. 23.06.2009 National Enduro Series - 6th round Upton, WY Shock Doctor/KTM rider Russell Bobbitt won the sixth round of the AMA National Enduro Series and increased his points lead over teammate Mike Lafferty with his fourth win of the season. Bobbitt had a great race from start to finish winning 4 of 6 special tests. “I felt good all day and my bike was jetted great for the conditions,” commented Bobbitt. “I only had one problem where I crashed on the last test of the day. I came over a blind rock and hit another rider who had already crashed there. I was ejected from my bike and had to drag it down the hill to continue the section. Despite my crash, this was a fun race and I really enjoyed the course.” Parts of the course became quite dusty throughout the day and the variety of terrain and trails provided quite a challenge for the riders. “We had tight single track sections, open pastures, rocks and water sections – it was a fun day to race,” commented Lafferty who finished 2nd overall. “We are excited for Russell and Mike – they both rode great this weekend,” commented Shock Doctor/KTM Team Manager Antti Kallonen. “It was also nice to see how well the other KTM riders performed – 6 of the top 10 riders were on KTM motorcycles.” KTM also had its Ride Orange hospitality rig headed by Mark Hyde at this event serving spaghetti dinner to over 400 people on Saturday night at the local high school. Over $2,000 was raised for the Upton High School FCCLA Program. In addition to the spaghetti dinner, KTM will help run the Montana Trail Vehicle Riders Association (MTVRA) trail ride on Thursday, June 25, 2009. Michael Lafferty rode one of his most impressive races of the year, taking a 25-second win over KTM teammate Russell Bobbitt at the final round of the AMA/Rekluse National Enduro Series in Upland, Indiana. However, it was Bobbitt who finished off this year’s super-competitive season with the national title - his third national championship in four years – after taking the runner-up finish. Bobbitt came into the Upland race needing only to finish second should Lafferty take the win, and the two championship contenders took turns holding the advantage over the course of the 65-mile event - just as they had in the series point standings during this year’s 10-race schedule. Bobbitt won the first and last of the six tests while Lafferty was fastest in the other four. In the end, Lafferty took 33 minutes and three seconds to complete the six test sections, compared to the 33 minutes and 28 seconds logged by Bobbitt. Taking his second podium in a row was Ohio Husaberg rider Nick Fahringer, after finishing the course in 34 minutes and 57 seconds. Meanwhile Virginia’s Brad Bakken finished fourth overall on a KTM at 37 minutes and 52 seconds. Fahringer and Bakken swapped positions in the overall standings, with Bakken ending the year in third overall with Fahringer in fourth. Fifth place in Indiana went to Yamaha’s Jeff Melik, while Josh Gaitten, Brooks Hamilton, Cole Kirkpatrick, Jake Fiola and Carsten Cagle rounded out the top 10.
